Care Closet FAQs

Care Closets give kids easy access to things they need every day, that they might not be able to get at home. Helps contribute to their self-esteem when they have their essentials!

At FUELS, we're dedicated to supporting students by assisting schools in establishing and maintaining care closets. We’re excited to delve into how these vital resources make a significant impact on our community. Below is a comprehensive FAQ to help you understand the role of care closets and their positive effects on our schools and students.

What is a Care Closet?

A care closet is a dedicated space within schools where students can access essential items with dignity. These items often include personal hygiene products, snacks, clothing, and school supplies. However, it’s crucial that the items in your care closet are tailored to meet the specific needs of your student population. By focusing on the most pressing needs of your students, a care closet ensures that every child has access to the necessities that support their well-being and academic success.

Why Are Care Closets Important?

Care closets address the immediate needs of students who may lack access to basic essentials. By providing a safe, accessible place where students can retrieve these items, care closets help remove barriers to learning and promote a supportive school environment. They also contribute to a sense of dignity and respect for every student.

How Did Care Closets Get Started?

The movement for care closets was significantly inspired by the efforts of Mrs. Arensberg, a dedicated educator whose compassion and commitment sparked a wave of care closets in our community. Her work has been a beacon of hope and support, showing how community-driven initiatives can make a profound impact. Here is a video of her care closet origin story.

What Items Are Typically Included in a Care Closet?

Care closets can include a variety of essential items, such as:

  • Hygiene Products: Soap, shampoo, toothpaste, feminine hygiene products

  • Food: Granola bars, breakfast bars, crackers, canned ravioli, etc

  • Clothing: Socks, underwear, shirts, uniforms, jackets

How Can I Get Involved?
